1. What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the permanent method of hair removal that uses of a fine probe (finer than the hair itself) to insert into a natural opening of the skin called the hair follicle. By sending a minute amount of electricity to this area, the follicle is disabled and can no longer produce a hair.

2. Does it hurt?

New technology through the state of the art equipment enables electrologists to treat even the most sensitive areas with very little discomfort, if at all.  There is a slight pulsating feeling of warmth at the follicle when the current is applied, lasting but a second.  Recommended topical anesthetics can be applied to help desensitize the area. There should be no reason for anyone to experience more discomfort than a slight heat sensation.

3. Is electrolysis really permanent?

YES! Electrolysis remains the only PERMANENT method of hair removal.  It is the only method that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the AMA (American Medical Association) recognizes as permanent.  The FDA/AMA has not granted any other technology the right to say "PERMANENT".  However, the success of the treatment is in direct correlation with the skill of the professional.

4. How safe is it?

HEC adheres to strict infection control standards. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) developed national standards for the sterilization of all instruments which may have parenteral contact.  HEC uses pre-sterilized, disposable probes.  Instruments are put through an ultrasonic cleaner, individually packaged and then autoclaved.  Universal Precautions that include handwashing before and after each client are followed.  A fresh pair of disposable gloves is used for each client.

5. How long will it take to get rid of my hair problem?

This is one of the most complicated questions that an electrologist has to answer.  It depends on how much hair is being treated.  Electrolysis is a "breaking down process".  The time is will take to reach permanency depends largely on the individuals commitment to regular treatments, hair growth patterns and any pertinent medical conditions and their therapies.

6. Is electrolysis expensive?

No.  Specialization and development of new equipment has brought this method of permanent hair removal down to a very affordable means.  Electrolysis is perhaps the least expensive cosmetic service you will ever employ considering its permanency.

The most important factor in determining the expense of electrolysis is the expertise of the electrologist. The correct insertion of the probe and the application of the current in the precise location within the follicle requires the utmost accuracy. In this situation, faster is definitely not better. A delicate balance between accuracy and efficiency needs to be maintained throughout the process.

7. How do I choose an electrologist?

First, Licensure is a must.  The New Jersey State Electrology Board requires all New Jersey Electrologists to be licensed.  Second, Board Certifcation is imperative. The AEA (American Electrology Association) has established specific standards including a national board certification credential, Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). Both of these associations and credentials requires ongoing continuing education to maintain licensure and board certification. Also, these associations are excellent sources of educational events, seminars, equipment updates, and exchanges of information that pertain to electrolysis.

8. Are there any side effects from Electrolysis?

Immediately following treatment there may be some redness and very slight swelling that should dissipate within the hour.  It is very important for the client to take proper care of the treated area with the appropriate after care treatment that is discussed after each treatment.
